Founding & history
St David’s was founded by the Marist Brothers in 1941. By 1953 the school had 475 pupils, 200 of them boarders. In 1963 the Brothers acquired 45 more acres of adjoining land. On the property is the house “Maryknoll”, the original Sandton farmhouse. The house is now the home of the College Executive Headmaster.

As St Marcellin Champagnat had originally founded the Marist Brothers to teach poor children in country areas of France devastated by war and revolution, the Brothers decided in 1982 to return to their roots and moved into rural and township areas where they believed they could help alleviate some of the pain and frustration. They handed over the running of their well-established schools to the laity. Regular contact with the Brothers is maintained, however.

An extensive building programme was undertaken in the 1990’s. This included a magnificent hall named after Marcellin Champagnat, a new Grade 0 block, College and Prep Pavilions, new classrooms, change rooms, a tuckshop and the conversion of the old hall (once the boarders’ dining room) into a Media Centre.
