Founding and history
St Benedict's College was founded by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1958 at the behest of Bishop O’Leary, the then Bishop of Johannesburg. The school, on a 30-acre site, is today owned by the St Benedict's Trust and administered by a Board of Governors. Day-to-day operations are conducted by a Headmaster, Principals, Deputies and excellent academic and sports staff.

As a Catholic School, St Benedict's sees genuine Christian formation as its fundamental purpose. It is a school with a strong academic tradition, producing outstanding results in the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) matriculation examinations. There has been no matric failure for thirty years, and University Entrance pass rates are invariably in the order of 95%.

Parnassus Farm is a 250-acre property in Magaliesburg, owned by the St Benedict's Trust. This is used as the school's Environmental Centre. The Centre, which consists of a Conference Centre, Dining Hall, 8 staff chalets and a guest house, caters for Leadership Camps, Academic and Sporting Camps and Religious retreats. Parnassus is also used by other schools for similar purposes.  Ravens Park is a 30-acre property in Linbro Park, Johannesburg, which was acquired in 2004 to cater for Preparatory School Cricket, Rugby and Soccer.

Sport at St Benedict’s has increased in importance - and in success - in recent years, largely as a result of St Benedict's unique "integrated day", where much of the boys' sport takes place during normal school hours. The same rigorous approach to sport is adopted as in academics, with increasingly excellent coaching and sporting facilities.  In the summer months participation in Basketball, Cricket, Rowing, Swimming, Tennis or Waterpolo is compulsory for all boys. Rugby or Hockey is compulsory in the winter months (except for boys selected for the College Pipe-band). Cross Country, Golf and Squash are offered as secondary sports offered at the senior level.

Bishop Grandin House, our boarding facility, opened its doors in January 2006 and has developed into a fully fledged boarding establishment, catering for 80 boys.  The hostel offers both Weekly and Termly Boarding for boys from Grades 7-12. Every effort is made to create a caring environment where each boy has the opportunity to realize his full potential within the class as well as on the sports fields. The boys develop a sense of independence within an environment of structure and discipline. Attendance at weekly Mass is compulsory and the termly boarders attend Mass on Sundays.
