Catholic Schools Council - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Mr Gavin Keller

Ms Julie Stacey

Mr Theo van Rooyen

Held on Saturday 28 January at St Teresa’s School, Rosebank, the CSC AGM was very well attended by Board members, Principals, RE Co-ordinators and Teachers. The beautiful weather contributed to a most successful morning.

Mike Greeff welcomed everyone and Mary Hyam opened the meeting with a prayer. The Executive Committee members provided feedback on the past year with regards to the activites in which their specific subgroups were involved. Rosa introduced the theme for 2012 – see banner photograph.

The keynote speaker was Mr Gavin Keller and his address was entitled “The Y Generation, 4 big ideas to reach and teach” (download summary).

After a delicious tea, the sub-group sessions were as follows:
RE Co-ordinators and teachers: Paul Faller: RE Programme 2012

High School teachers: Julie Stacey: “From the Inside Out – Discovering What Values Drive You”

Pre-School and Primary School teachers: Gavin Keller: “Neuro leadership for South African Schools – Three Myths, Three Shifts” (download summary)

Principals and Board members: Theo van Rooyen: "HR Imperatives in the modern school environment"

We are delighted to welcome old volunteers back and new volunteers onto the CSC Executive Committee and look forward to some exciting initiatives and activities in the year ahead.

RADIO VERITAS on Education

Throughout January, Radio Veritas focused their Friday evening show between 18h00 – 19h00 on Catholic Education.

In the final show of the series, on 27th January, the Director of the CSO, Rosa Calaça, provided a live interview on aspects such as learner leadership, matriculation results and the purpose and function of the CSO.

MATRIC RESULTS 2011

CONGRATULATIONS to our Grade 12s of 2011 on their outstanding results.  In Gauteng, Catholic Schools achieved a 93,6% pass rate which was significantly above the 81,1% provincial pass rate.  We are indeed very proud of this achievement especially as it is the culmination of many years work, from grade R, on the part of principals, educators and particularly learners.

Some outstanding achievements amongst the Catholic Schools:

In Pretoria, CBC Mount Edmund’s top achiever earned 9 distinctions, two earned 8 distinctions and one earned 7 distinctions.  Loreto Convent School and Tsogo Secondary School also had top achievers who earned 7 distinctions.  CBC Mount Edmund, Iona Convent and Loreto Convent School all achieved an overall pass rate of 100%.

In Johannesburg, De La Salle Holy Cross College’s top achiever earned 11 distinctions and was amongst the top 5% of IEB candidates nationwide. De La Salle Holy Cross College and St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls both had learners who earned 9 distinctions and there were several schools where learners achieved 7 and 8 distinctions, including Assumption Convent School, De La Salle Holy Cross College, Holy Rosary School, Sacred Heart College, St David’s Marist Inanda, St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls and St Martin de Porres Secondary School.  Schools that achieved a 100% pass rate included Assumption Convent School, Brescia House School, De La Salle Holy Cross College, Holy Rosary School, La Salle College, Marist Brothers Linmeyer, Maryvale College, McAuley House, Sacred Heart College, St Benedict’s College, St Catherine’s Convent Florida, St Catherine’s Dominican Convent Germiston, St David’s Marist Inanda, St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls, St Teresa’s School, St Ursula’s and Veritas College.
