In the following years, Loreto Convent School continued to show a brave, pioneering spirit. During the siege of Pretoria in 1880-1881, the convent opened its doors to the wounded and dying and all the rooms were packed with women and children who had had to flee their homes. There was anxiety at the end of the war when it was thought that the Government might suppress the school, but President Paul Kruger decided otherwise. Indeed, it is recorded that he enjoyed concerts in the school hall on more than one occasion. Loreto Convent School was among the first to admit children from all races and held firm in the face of threats of closure from the Department of Education. The school now serves mainly those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and we strive constantly to reach out to those less fortunate than ourselves. Motto Current
