RESOURCES
THE
SECOND MILE: Review of a School's Distinctive Catholic Character
Catholic
schools are called to be co-workers in the Church’s evangelising
mission. The Second Mile:
Review of the Distinctive Character of a Catholic School is an
instrument which will assist South African Catholic schools to
understand and live out this mission. It can be used as a resource
for a process which appraises the distinctive religious character of
a Catholic school.
PART
ONE, Surveying the Landscape, provides background essays to
assist reflection on the complex world in which Catholic schools
operate, and considers how Catholic schools can respond in
witnessing to the Good News of Jesus Christ in the modern world. The
discussions on ethos, religious education and pastoral care provide
food for thought as to the expectations in these three indispensable
areas of the life of a Catholic school.
PART
TWO, Guide to Conducting the Review, is a thorough and
step-by-step “users’ instruction manual” for conducting the
review process.
PART
THREE, The Review Instrument, contains descriptions of the
beliefs, values, qualities, attitudes, practices, traditions,
policies, systems, procedures, structures, capacities and situations
that, if present in a school, would be indicators of the school’s
distinctive Catholic character. Examples show how the indicators
could be manifested in a school. The school rates itself on these
indicators, and identifies strengths and also opportunities for
further development or improvement, so that it may indeed be worthy
of the name “Catholic school.”
The
Review Instrument can also be downloaded here as a Microsoft
Word document so that it can be filled in electronically without
having to be retyped.
