Founding & history
In 1928, Iona Convent School opened its doors to its first six pupils. Ostriches roamed the nearby koppie where the Pretoria Academic Hospital now stands, and a cow was tethered in the yard to make sure there was milk for staff tea-time. Most pupils walked to school but some of the fortunate ones rode on bicycles.

Today, with five hundred learners on the roll, the school continues to offer a service highly valued by parents. Over the years, Iona Convent has had a special interest in providing for the community in the lower-income bracket. Today, learners come from the surrounding formerly disadvantaged areas. Provision is made for the free and subsidised education of a number of children. Thirty children who are affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic are accommodated free of charge.
