Founding & history
The
Dominican School for Deaf Children
in Hammanskraal was established by the Irish Dominican Sisters
in 1962 after black children were no longer allowed to attend school
with coloured children at the
Dominican School for Deaf Children in Wittebome, Cape Town.
The school started with 27 learners, 5 teachers and 2 hostel staff.
Today, enrolment stands at 433, aged from 3 to 25 years, and there
are 47 teachers. 89% of the learners come from families where the
parents are unemployed and, also, do not have a decent roof over
their heads.
This is a comprehensive school divided into three sections: the
pre-school, primary and technical sections. Academic studies are
from Grade R to Grade 7. Thereafter, in the technical section,
learners follow technical courses and accredited courses in hair
care, computer studies, hotel studies and machine sewing.
