In August 1997 the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference adopted the policy, Fostering Hope, for religious education in Catholic schools. The policy was revised in 2006 to bring it in line with developments in National Education. When referring to curriculum, the policy advocates a number of different dimensions such as classroom programmes, school prayer and liturgical worship, religious societies and pastoral care programmes, the observance of national days, and outreach projects.
In most instances broad guidelines are given, and the individual school is encouraged to develop its own policy.
