A renewing passion
South Africa has 348 Catholic schools. Of these 247 are public schools on private property, a legally defined type of school which allows for the protection and development of the distinctive Catholic religious character. There are 101 independent schools, some of which receive a state subsidy. There are 176,260 pupils in the schools, of whom only 25 % are Catholic. The majority of the schools serve economically disadvantaged communities which experience high levels of violence. 6% of the South African population are Catholic. The following response was obtained from consultation with personnel from the staff of the Catholic Institute of Education and all other Catholic school service offices.
